Overview

UAE Corporate Tax — What Dubai Businesses Need to Know

Federal Decree-Law No. 47 of 2022 introduced UAE Corporate Tax effective for financial years commencing on or after 1 June 2023. This landmark change means virtually every business operating in Dubai — mainland, free zone, or branch — must register for Corporate Tax and file annual returns. The 9% rate on taxable income above AED 375,000 is among the lowest CT rates globally, but the compliance obligations are real and the penalties for non-compliance are significant.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions — Corporate Tax Dubai

Who needs to pay corporate tax in Dubai?
UAE Corporate Tax applies to all juridical persons incorporated in the UAE, including Dubai, as well as foreign companies with a permanent establishment in the UAE. Individuals conducting business through a licensed entity are also subject to CT. Natural persons conducting business personally are subject to CT only if their annual business turnover exceeds AED 1,000,000. The CT rate is 9% on taxable income exceeding AED 375,000, with 0% on the first AED 375,000.
What is the corporate tax rate in Dubai / UAE?
The UAE Corporate Tax rate is 0% on taxable income up to AED 375,000, and 9% on taxable income above AED 375,000. Qualifying Free Zone Persons (QFZPs) can benefit from a 0% rate on Qualifying Income. A different minimum rate (15%) may apply to large multinationals covered by the OECD Pillar Two rules — for groups with consolidated revenues exceeding EUR 750 million.
What is Small Business Relief for UAE Corporate Tax?
Small Business Relief (SBR) allows eligible businesses with revenue of AED 3,000,000 or below to be treated as having zero taxable income — resulting in no CT liability. SBR must be elected annually in the CT return. Businesses electing SBR must still register for CT, file returns, and maintain accounting records. SBR is not available to qualifying free zone persons or multinational enterprise group members. Essence Accounting assesses your SBR eligibility as part of every CT engagement.
When is the corporate tax return due in Dubai?
The UAE Corporate Tax return must be filed within 9 months from the end of the relevant tax period (financial year). CT payment is also due within the same 9-month window. Failure to register for CT incurs AED 10,000; failure to file the return costs AED 500/month for the first 12 months, then AED 1,000/month thereafter.
Do Dubai free zone companies pay corporate tax?
Dubai free zone companies may qualify as Qualifying Free Zone Persons (QFZPs), giving them a 0% rate on Qualifying Income. However, non-qualifying income — such as income from mainland UAE transactions — is taxed at 9%. To maintain QFZP status, the company must meet substance requirements and pass the de minimis test. Essence Accounting helps free zone companies assess and maintain QFZP eligibility.
